Ekwendeni Hospital HIV/AIDS Programme (EHAP) operates as part of the Primary Healthcare Department (PHC) of Ekwendeni CCAP Hospital, a faith-based hospital run by the Synod of Livingstonia Health Department. It is located in the northern Mzimba District in northern Malawi.
The programme seeks to share God’s love by working with communities and vulnerable families living with HIV and AIDS or other chronic illnesses to overcome poverty, improve the quality of life of vulnerable groups and to help people build sustainable livelihoods. In addition, the programme aims to work towards establishing an HIV and AIDS-free community and generation by encouraging all people to know their HIV status and prevent infection or re-infection.
The hospital’s catchment area is 600km2surrounding Ekwendeni, with a population of over 100,000. The hospital employs 250 staff and treats over 31,033 out-patients every year, of which over 5,487 are admissions. HIV, pneumonia, acute respiratory infections and malaria are the most frequent causes for admission. The facilities include: a nutrition rehabilitation unit that feeds malnourished children, as well as teaches mothers about diet, nutrition, and vegetable gardening; a dental surgery unit; an orthopaedic unit established in 2006 representing the second of its kind in the country; a maternity unit which accommodates more than 2,150 births annually; an antiretroviral (ARV) treatment facility with 7,295 clients registered on ARV treatment; and an ophthalmology department. In addition, because of the hospital’s strong Primary Healthcare Department, the HIV and AIDS Programme was subsequently developed.
The Ekwendeni catchment area has a total of 11,000 orphans and vulnerable children who have lost either one or both parents to AIDS or other cause of death. Others who live with both parents are often very poor or sick. Most of these children do not have access to adequate basic needs such as food, clothing and housing. They do not have an opportunity to pursue their education because of poverty despite the government of Malawi offering free primary education. The situation is even worse for OVC (orphans and vulnerable children) who are often not able to continue with their education.
